The first ever DStv Eutelsat Star Awards
Satellite technology is amazing. Look at the way it is changing our lives. It brings us TV, live sport, banking, education, weather forecasts and long-distance medical diagnosis.
The Star Awards aim to stimulate interest and passion for satellite technology in young people across Africa. Students are required to be innovative about its possible uses and, importantly, how they would use satellite technology to develop and improve Africa.
The Prizes
Finalists from individual countries across Africa will compete for the overall prizes:
- For the winner – a trip to a spaceport to attend a live rocket launch, including a visit to Eutelsat in Paris, France
- For the runner-up – a trip to Eutelsat in Paris
- For the two merit winners – a trip to MultiChoice and Mindset in Johannesburg

Entries must reach us by 01 August 2011
NO EXTENSIONS WILL BE GIVEN
Topics and Categories
Students will be required to design a poster or write an essay on how satellites could improve Africa’s development or the development of their country/community.
Students are encouraged to consult with their science or technology teachers to increase the quality of their entries.
Essay requirements
1200 to 1400 words
Typed in Arial 12, 1.5 spacing
Pages to be numbered
Only printed entries will be accepted
Entries may include illustrations, graphics or diagrams
Poster requirements
No bigger than A3 (42 x 29.7cm)
No electronic poster formats will be accepted
All poster entries must be accompanied by a typed summary with the following information:
- Title
- Summary of idea/concept
- Problem statement (what area is being addressed through the proposed solution)
- Description of solution (how the problem is addressed)
- References (all sources consulted during the preparation of the entry)
Essays and posters can be in English, Portuguese or French. However please note that television programmes broadcast on Mindset Learn will only be broadcast in English. French and Portuguese versions of the films are available in the resource section of this website.
Judging Criteria
Our panel of judges are looking for innovative thinking and good ideas. They will be judging your work using this criteria:

The Categories and Prizes
The top essay and poster from each country will be selected as country winners and will compete in the final judging in Johannesburg, South Africa for the overall awards. Check with your MultiChoice country office for country prize details.
