Joseph Mahiya is a final year student at Hellenic International Academy in Harare, Zimbabwe. He is 18 years old and won the country award for the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards Competition in the essay category. Joseph is currently studying Maths ,Physics, Chemistry, Further Maths, and would like to pursue a career in software engineering.

Attributes of his success for winning in the Essay category.

Joseph wrote the essay primarily to fulfil his dream to motivate young people, and to also help tackle societal challenges through the use of satellites.
He researched extensively on the internet and also used his physics school text books to get as much information as he could on the subject. Joseph also consulted with Mrs Makings who is a literature teacher at Hellenic to ensure that he did not go off topic.
Because Joseph has always had a great passion for technology, the competition came as a great opportunity to showcase his abilities.

Hannah Kasule, 17 currently in form 6 with Gayaza High School and the national winner for the poster category for DStv Eutelsat Star Awards competition for Uganda. Gayaza High School in Uganda is a traditional and yet reputable school that is renowned for producing exceptional students and citizens in the future.

Hannah is a science student majoring in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry/Computer.

Attributes of her success for Winning in the poster category

Hannah has been passionate about the DStv Eutelsat competition for over two years. She first got inspired to participate in the competition in 2012 and submitted an essay which unfortunately never qualified in the top four slots. She picked herself up and learnt from her mistakes and in 2014 decided to participate under the poster category. Luckily she had background information on the subject and had done extensive research on satellites so it strengthened her entry this time around.

She did extensive research on the internet and read online journals in order to get more information on the subject. She also reviewed several images of satellites online for her winning poster before she finally put the winning piece together.

Hannah was guided by her Art Teacher- Mr. Atuhaire who accorded her a great deal of aid especially regarding the picture quality and concept for her winning poster.

Hannah further attributed her success to her passion for art which drove her to finally get her the product that put her through to be the best poster in the country. She also added that her fellow students especially the art students who she continuously consulted from time to time for help also contributed to her success

João Nuno Freire Melo is 14 year old, was born in Macau, China and moved to Angola when he was 8 years old. João attends the French School which is based in Luanda and is currently at a secondary education level.

João has always liked physics and astronomy but is very keen on technology and computing. He likes practicing sports in order to maintain a healthy life style and keep an acceptable balance between studying and exercising. In the future he would like to work in the area of mechanical and electrical engineering although he has not decided what profession to take. João decided to participate in the Star Awards because technologies and their capabilities intrigue him and he welcomes the role that space science to improve the lives of people in our society. He encourages people to respect nature and is excited about the launch of the first ever Angolan satellite called AngoSat in 2017.

Lesley Chakurira completed upper 6 at Lomugundi College in 2014, where she was both school Head Girl and Head Of House.. She is 18 years old and won the country award for the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards Competition in the poster category. She is currently doing a gap year leadership course in South Africa and would like to study architecture.

Attributes of his success in the Poster category.

Lesley has always enjoyed art and loves to express herself with bright colours. Although she found the topic to be a challenge, she saw the competition as an opportunity to showcase the beauty and the richness of Zimbabwe in terms of culture, environment and the people. She believed that God would direct her work and he did. She is grateful to her art teachers, Mrs Siringwani and Mrs Wilson from Lomugundi and her family who motivated her and assisted her in coming up with a winning entry. Lesley wants to encourage other young people to never allow fear to hold them back from pursuing their dreams and passion.
